‘happy design’

August 26th, 2008

This is a TED talk by Stefan Sagmeister that is definitely worth a look. I watched it a year or so ago but thought I’d look it up again and decided to post it here.

Please follow this link to visit the Total IT Supplies website as it is currently. The site is not finished as their is still information which needs uploading but the client wished to have an online presence in place for the formation of their business, hence its current existence online.

TITS…

August 21st, 2008

I am currently working on a project for an IT supplies company called Total IT Supplies… or T.I.T.S. It is to be an all female company hence the name and I was asked to create an identity and website for the company.Below are some of the logo ideas I created whilst developing my ideas and creating a final identity that both I, but more importantly, the client was satisfied with.

Above are the first iterations of the identity I created. The firm was to be unique in its market as it is a female only business and as it had a sense of humour as a result of its name. The concept was to use birds (Tits) to draw attention to the name of the business without making to too crude or obvious. The client wasn’t sure about this identity and felt that it may be too ‘cartoony’ for the brand so I was asked to develop it further.

I kept the logo looking stylised at this point and continued to work with the image of a bird, but in a much crisper and more corporate style. The client decided to reduce the sense of humour they wished the business to have and were still unsure about the incorporation of a bird/Tit and suggested that maybe an image of a generic laptop or PC may suffice.

I came back to the client with these designs and the one below which they chose. I felt that the designs I worked with and the one above which I showed them of a simple monitor lacked so much of the character that the previous designs had that I explained this too them. The monitor which included the computer desktop looked more visually appealing, but was also empty as it bared no direct relation to the company it was referring to and could have been a generic identity.g.jpg

The final design I created (along with several colour variations) was the one above. The client really liked the design, which combined an image of a piece of IT equipment with a bird and was impressed and pleased that I continued to experiment with the image of a bird even after they became wary of the inclusion of it. The client was satisfied with the identity, as am I and the next step was then to work on a website for Total IT Supplies.

New beginnings…

August 21st, 2008

Hi and welcome to my new blog.

The posts below have been imported from my old Blogger account and I will try to post things that I find interesting and creative here on a regular basis as I did whilst at University.

Please feel free to visit my new website and have a look at some of the work I created whilst at University and some of the live projects I have worked on during that time and since.

I Dig Cereal Killers

Heres a nice design blog themed around Halloween, “I Dig Cereal Killers”, worth a look.

Tape Artists

October 6th, 2007

This is an interesting way to create animation that I haven’t seen before, they just use tape to create the sequences on a large empty wall space. They people behind it also created tape figures around New York of all the firefighters, plane passengers and office workers that dies on September 11th.

A Blind Call

October 5th, 2007

The idea A Blind Call is that people often dial the number of a phone that appears first in their contact list (e.g. Aaron Aaronson) whilst the phone is in their pocket and it still costs them money. The idea is simple and it is that by putting the charities number in your phone as “A Blind Call” it will appear at the top of the list, and the charge received for making the call goes direct to the charity. A simple idea more than a creative execution, but its one that I think is worth noting.

Bravia Rabbits

Sony Bravia - Play Doh Ad
Uploaded by tvspot

This is the new Bravia spot that follows the balls and paint spots. I really like it, it seems to take a step back towards the balls ad which was much more playful than paint and I think this is a good thing as for me it made it entertaining to watch and added more emotion than paint, which was more of a spectacle to watch than a thing to engage with on an emotional level. The soundtrack is also worth noting for its appropriateness with regards to colour and also the feeling of light-hearted relaxation that it creates in the listener. It will be interesting to see if the response is similar to that of the previous spots.

Below is the Egyptian/Middle East Bravia advert which less people may have seen, still quite interesting but for me it lacks the playfulness of the Rabbits or Balls spots, but then again I’m not the target audience.
