Richard Sweeney Sculptures

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

In this months Creative Review Monograph is the work of Richard Sweeney.

He manipulates material such as paper into amazing sculptures which are photographed against a plain background to remove any sense of scale and create ambiguity.

The sculptural qualities of teh curves in the above design remind me very much of this staircase created by Thomas Heatherwick.

Sweeney lets the material dictate the form instead of forcing it and the resulting curves, cut out areas and regions of light and shadow reveal amazingly tactile surfaces that have so much intrigue around their creation and scale.

Igor Mitoraj

I discovered Mitoraj on the graphics blog and he seems to draw his sculptural style heavily from classical sculptures, well modelled features and sculpted torsos.

The classical nature of his work is also emphasised through the “missing” portions of the faces and bodies, which suggests that the pieces have fallen from larger full sculptures over the centuries.

I think that they work well due to their scale and locations as you would expect the sculptures to be near the larger pieces you think they should have fallen from, or in a museum, and also the cracking and texture Mitoraj adds and the way that light and shadow would these elements would probably result in the emphasis of the sculpted elements and their suggested history.
